A/B/O DYNAMICS

A/B/O Dynamics, or Alpha/Beta/Omega Dynamics, are a trope that centers around the concept of wherein characters have defined biological roles based on a hierarchical system, with the terms originating from animal behaviour research, and the relationships between Alphas, Betas and Omegas. At birth, all characters present a primary gender - male or female. By puberty, females and males present as their secondary gender - Alpha, Beta or Omega. Presentation is typically accompanied by a heat or rut, and after secondary presentation they give off a certain scent depending on whether they are Alpha, Beta or Omega.

ALPHA

The Alpha is at the top of the food chain in every sense of the word. They are usually the most aggressive, often times larger in musculature and height thanks to their heightened testosterone levels. They are dominant in most every aspect of their lives (though there are exceptions to everything), especially in the bedroom. It’s not uncommon for an Alpha to take on a submissive role in sex but only when in a mated pair, only then is it for the mate’s pleasure. Alphas often are selfish when it comes to carnal desires but when mated have often exhibited a gentleness and compassion.

Alpha males also tend to have larger penises than the other classes, a development made for the pleasure of the lower classes. When breeding, the base of the penis swells into a knot to lock the two bodies in place to ensure a more successful breeding. Alphas also tend to ejaculate much more volume wise than other classes. When an Alpha ruts, their bodies exude even more pheromones to attract lower classes as well as the time they’re most virile and ready to mate.

Alpha females look like regular women with a smaller, external knot and internal testes.

Male and female Alphas equally and successfully can get their Omega mates pregnant. An Alpha's ability to procreate with an Omega is 80% over that of a Beta's. They're incredibly potent.

BETA

The Beta is in the middle of the hierarchy; they are subservient to Alphas but superior to Omegas. Despite this, there are more than twice the amount of Beta as there are Alphas.

They’re not exactly remarkable. Betas do not go into ruts or heats nor do they have knots. They can still mate with Omegas, though it's best to avoid doing so because of how territorial Alphas are and because of the draw between Alphas and Omegas. Because of this they tend to match up with other Betas.

Only Beta females can get pregnant, and can be impregnated by either an Alpha or a Beta though they have a lower rate of conceiving compared to Omegas.

Beta males can impregnate Omegas. A Beta's ability to procreate with an Omega is 20% lower that of an Alpha's. It's also difficult for a Beta to satiate or lessen an Omega's heat. That said, when an Omega is in heat or an Alpha is in rut, the Beta feels a subtle draw towards them. It's an instant attraction.

OMEGA

The Omega is the lowest of the hierarchy and are highly desirable to both Betas and Alphas. Omegas can conceive through mating with either an Alpha or a Beta. Every month, Omegas go into heat, the period when they’re most fertile and ready to be bred. This time coincides with the full moon and lasts anywhere from a few hours to a few days depending on the Omega. Omegas also tend to be smaller in stature and even penis size compared to Betas and Alphas, but that’s only a generalization. There have been varying cases. Omegas have slick-glands, or auto-lubricant glands, that when stimulated produce a moist substance that resembles real life lube and makes penetration easier. All Omegas produce slick when they are aroused and even more when they are in heat.

PUBERTY

By puberty, all Alphas will have experienced at least one instance in which they've noticed a knot, whether it be during sex or masturbation or even a wet dream. It's a spur of the moment thing and though it may not happen often thereafter, most know by age 16. Omegas/Betas are tricky because you won't know for sure until around 18.

Omegas go into their first heat around age 18. Because of the types of hormones and pheromones they give off, puberty usually releases the scents that are unique to Alphas and Omegas. If an Omega hasn't had their first heat yet their smell is very mute and not noticeable, except to a much older and much more experienced.

It can be a complicated ordeal but essentially puberty and especially the knot/heat is the major indicator, but experienced Alphas can likely sniff it out prior to a heat.

Blood can be tested for Alpha/Beta/Omega genes but people rarely go through the trouble unless they want to find out early, while their kids are still young. The main purpose might be to arrange an ideal marriage from an early age.

HEATS

The Omega enters a heat that lasts anywhere from a few hours to a few days a month, brought on by the immense magic of the full moon. Every Omega's cycle is different with some falling into the heat on the day of the full moon, while some see the symptoms before or after the phenomenon. This time is when Omegas are most fertile. Additionally, they are more driven, if not focused, on mating with an Alpha. In an ideal situation, an Omega in heat would stay with their Alpha mate throughout the cycle.

The Alphas will likely care for them and protect them during this period. An Omega with no mate is likely to attract all the wrong attention as they release hormones that arouse Alphas and incite ruts. While Omega males typically have self lubrication outside of their heat when aroused, the heat is when the levels sky rocket. It isn't uncommon to have to change repeatedly. Also the extra lubrication is a sign of an Omega in heat. It has a unique scent per Omega and attracts Alphas.

During a heat the Omega becomes more sensitive and more aggressive. Sexual satisfaction becomes difficult because their body is in overdrive to breed and whether or not they'll wake up sore/exhausted/etc, they'll go on and on, in desperation of relief of that intense drive. The more sex an Omega has the better they usually feel and the weaker their hormones become when not aroused. The more fertile an Omega is the longer their heats will last.

An Omega's first heat occurs around age 16-18, though the hormones aren't as strong. The first couple of heats are strange for Omegas because their body's hormones are array, but they soon get used to the changes.

POSSIBLE SYMPTOMS OF 1ST/DELAYED HEAT:
Dizziness/Lightheadedness
Nausea
Anxiety
Heightened sexual drive
Sex temporarily alleviates the effects

NORMAL HEAT
Warm/above average temp
Sensitive skin/areas
Hyper Alertness
Lack of concentration
Heightened need to mate
Sex temporarily alleviates the other more annoying affects of the heat
Despite birth control medication this desire remains incredibly strong and often puts Omegas at risk as it blinds their sense of judgement.

RUTS

Ruts are in direct response to the pheromones of an Omega in heat. Alphas are also able to catch the scent/pheromone of the Omega's self lubrication which is a slight different smell that sort of seals the deal in terms of an on/off switch. At that point it doesn't really matter however, because the initial pheromones are enough to get Alphas aroused and into rut. Rut is a phase/state of mind of aggression and lust, in which the Alpha is driven to mate with the Omega. Alphas will even fight over Omegas in this state and there are some cases of non-consensual acts. Many Alphas learn to resist their rut because of all this.

Also Alphas who are biologically related to nearby Omegas will have a much lesser reaction, not non-existent but much calmer. Most think this has to do with the pheromones being individual and based on DNA, therefore the Alpha would be able to pick up a difference.

Young Alphas have a difficult time resisting their ruts but it starts off fairly weak and increases the older they get/the more interactions they have with Omegas until around 20ish. Most Alphas will have a very difficult time resisting or combatting their response to an Omega in heat. Alphas typically produce more sperm but during ruts they produce even more as a response to the mating process. It's a way to increase chances of breeding and reproducing.

The pheromones and strong scents of Omega females are less than 1/3rd of that of an Omega male. This makes it so that Alpha Males regardless of sexuality are deeply affected by Omega Males. Most straight Alphas will take rut suppressant to avoid the influence of Omega males.

SUPPRESSANTS

Like human birth control, suppressants prevent heats and ruts and prevent pregnancy. The only thing that can stop suppressants from working is an encounter with one’s soulmate, where the two parties engage in unprotected sex. Prolonged use of suppressants in Omegas can lead to infertility and/or pregnancy complications in the future.

Alpha-R: is a small pill that can be taken daily to reduce the intensity and compulsion of ruts. Most Alphas don't feel a need to take medication. The society typically places the pressure on the Omega to control their heats.

Omega-A: This is a suppressant to control the heat of an Omega. It takes away heats completely and allows Omegas to secretly identify as Beta/Alpha. These pills are expensive and also have negative side effects including sickness and possibility of permanent infertility. The wealthy typically partake in it, and usually just go in for frequent check ups and maintenance. The upside to this option is that the the Omega can hide their status. These suppressants have to be taken weekly. An alternative method is for the liquid form to be injected by a physician/clinic. This also prevents pregnancy.

Omega-B: This suppressant serves as a birth control. The Omega will experience heats but it will prevent conception. There are no dangerous side effects. This must be taken daily by Omegas and can prevent an actually pregnancy for up to 48 hrs after sex. The smell of an Omega taking Omega-B will be half as strong as a non-medicated Omega. It's still a strong scent but noticeably different, and the Omega is more in control of their behavior.

Pheraline - This is a pill created to incite a release of hormones in Betas that would incite rutting for Alphas. To Alphas with more experience, the individual Omega pheromones are missing and it's less irresistible but by then there's enough arousal and drive that it would most likely not matter to them. It only works for Betas. it was also used as an excuse by Omegas using Omega-A who skipped a couple doses, but it doesn't typically work because they have their own distinct Omega scent.

"Gamma X" Fragrance - This fragrance smells like amber and musk, with a splash of vanilla. It's available to the entire public but it has a special effect on Omegas. This fragrance exists in several forms: body spray, perfume, cologne, powder and even cream. The purpose is to neutralize the pheromones given off by Omegas in heat. The effects vary. An omega in heat who abstains from sex has a much stronger smell. An omega who frequently has sex throughout their heat will likely have a very low scent.

On average Gamma X will last about 5 hours. For Omegas with high pheromones, that may cut it down to 3. For those very sexually active, it may last for 8 hrs. It's usually encouraged for Omegas to mate/couple up with an Alpha for both the protection against other Alphas, as well as the added benefit of having lower pheromone levels. With that combined with Gamma X, they would be able to live close to a normal life... outside of the exhaustion. Unfortunately the fragrance is very expensive. It doesn't take care of the self lubrication pheromone issue. It's all a process and between being able to afford it and having to keep track of the schedule, it can become a nuisance.

KNOTTING

Knotting in A/B/O, conceptually, is the same way that it is for dogs and wolves. During penetrative sex, an Alpha’s knot inflates the closer they get to orgasm. The knot locks them inside of their sex partner while they cum, theoretically to increase the chance of pregnancy. Knots typically last for at least an hour. Orgasm can be achieved without knotting one’s partner.

Most Omegas will want to avoid having the Alpha's knot inside them, but it's usually too late by the time they 'remember'. The consensus about the knot's existence is that it locks the lovers together for 10-15 minutes and heightens the chance of pregnancy. It can be painful to try to pull out once it's swollen enough.

On the plus side, what usually ends up happening is that the knot presses against the G spot or prostate and naturally pulsates as the Alpha ejaculates, thus lessening the pain and giving the Omega pleasure, even inciting orgasms. Omegas are more apt to handle knotting, where as Betas will feel more pain than pleasure.

The knot doesn't go down fully until the Alpha is empty but Alphas are quite virile and will surprise you with how quickly they're back up and ready for round 3. While Omegas will strive to have more and more sex during their heat to alleviate their increased lust/sexual drive, sex with an Alpha is more fulfilling because of their stamina. Despite the mental awareness of knotting, if the two are mates, there is a sensation of bonding and intimacy during those minutes that are about as euphoric as any other high. That alone can diminish discomfort.

Some Alphas don't knot with non-Omega partners. Some don't knot outside of penetrative sex. There's a list of variables involved and it's usually specific to each person. Some have sporadic moments in which they can or cannot knot. It's believed that this has more to do with the bond and connection between the partners than any inability or problem with the Alpha. Although there are small discrepancies, the average Alpha's knot begins to form just moments before they feel they're going to ejaculate.

MATES

While Alphas, Beta and Omegas can choose a mate, there are cases in which they develop a strong bond that transcends the physical attraction. It's an emotional and personal bond that has less to do with the physical mating or claiming acts.

Mating bond develops easily and naturally. Much like regular dating, two partners come to know each other's minds and bodies for a time until there is a connection built between them. The most common way that this bond forms is through sex, couples naturally find themselves connected after engaging in an intercourse a few times. That instinctual draw comes more from the physical want and desire first, then everything else next.

Scent marking is practiced by mated Alphas, Betas and Omegas to reassure themselves in times of distress and/or to mark their ‘territory’. Mates typically scent each other or scent mark each other by wearing one another’s clothes, clinging to each other, or sniffing one another’s scent glands.

CLAIMING

To make it well known that they have found their mate, one of the partners gives the other a bite. In Alpha/Omega pairs, the bite is always done by an Alpha. In other dynamics, the bite is usually done by the more dominant partner. This bite does not necessarily have to be on the neck, it can be anywhere on the body. The bite creates a psychological link between the partners. For the Omega there isn't a lot of pain. In fact, because this is usually done during the height of sex, it becomes a rather dull throbbing sensation. While an Alpha can mark their beta mate, when this is done, it is usually very painful.

The bite is an act of claiming. It's one thing to mate (have sex) with someone and another to have an actual mate. The bite is what solidifies that. Once the Alpha has bitten their mate they lack the urge to do so to another. If an Omega is bitten at the same time by two Alphas the connection is shared.

Once the bite is done, the bonding (if not completed prior) would likely occur soon after. In many arranged situations, complete strangers have become mates and partners, and eventually develop a strong connection. They'll likely develop feelings for one another, even if it's minimal and more platonic than romantic. This is to ensure the investment between the partners.

TRUE BOND - SOULMATES

It is the idea that there are people, no matter the species, no matter the age, who are destined for one another from their very first breath. Soul mates can come in the form of Alpha/Alpha, Alpha/Beta, Alpha/Omega, Beta/Beta, Beta/Omega, or Omega/Omega parings (Omega/Omega and Alpha/Alpha pairings are typically marginalized and discriminated against in the same way the LGBT community is in real life).

Soul mates are drawn to each other inexplicably. Some discover it at very first touch, and often times can simply tell by looking into one another’s eyes that they are soulmates, or are merely drawn to one another with no real knowledge as to why. For others, it can take a moment, a certain mix of emotions, or one day...it is just there.

Soulmates offer emotional, mental, and spiritual support on a level that no one else can. So deep is their bond that the connected duo are capable of telepathy with one another, and unlike with the telepathy seen in certain species, they do NOT have to be within eyesight of one another. Through this connection, they can share more than just words and thoughts. They are capable of sharing images and feelings. Though always there, it is possible for soul mates to block the other out through the use of mental walls. It takes some practice but once it is learned it can become as natural as breathing.

For some time, it's been theorized that one can only have one soulmate in their lifetime but it's been proven (to a small degree) that that's not necessarily true.

Though the majority of times this connection is found in lovers and those romantically linked, there have been instances, however rare, that the bonded are more platonic in their relationship. This has been known to cause strife or feelings of discord in the bonded's intimate relationship, due to a jealousy over the link. However, that is all dependent on those involved.

Witches are able to sever this bond, and as repercussion for the unnatural act of separation, both partners would feel a sense of emptiness. As if they're missing something inside them. The bond can re-form after a length of time and if they're around one another often.

We are aware that sometimes players leave or things go awry. If necessary, this bonding can be written out or retconned at the player's discretion.
